Scarlet and Violet era cards in Pokemon TCG

Let’s have a recap and take a look at the 10 most expensive cards from the Scarlet and Violet era of Pokemon TCG.

As much as we missed it, gone are the days when collecting Pokemon cards was for everyone, including kids. Today, Pokemon cards are now treated much like appreciating assets, and with it comes the ever-increasing prices of Pokemon TCG products.

Some cards from various sets can fetch a price of as much as $400, with some of the best examples being those that belong to the Scarlet and Violet era of the franchise.

From the Base Set to Black Bolt and White Flare, here are the cards that broke the market and became the priciest of their generation.

10. SIR Greninja ex (Twilight Masquerade)

Greninja Ex From Twilight Masquerade Set

As a Kitakami-themed set, Twilight Masquerade is most widely known for its colorful Greninja ex, which was drawn skillfully by akagi, the same artist behind other cards like the SIR Ceruledge ex from Prismatic Evolutions.

Apart from its eye-catching illustration, there are other reasons why SIR Greninja ex became quite expensive, and we made a previous post about this unique card.

9. SIR Sylveon ex (Prismatic Evolutions)

There’s a reason why some people gave Prismatic Evolutions the nickname “Traumatic Evolutions.” Alongside the crazy prices of Prismatic Evolution products, pulling any of the Eeveelutions is next to impossible, which quickly inflated the value of some cards like this SIR Sylveon ex.

Sylveon ex is currently the second most expensive card in the Prismatic Evolutions set; it’s not even close to the one who gets the top spot, as you will later see at the end of this article.

8. SIR Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex (Destined Rivals)

Destined Rivals will always remain as one of the most memorable sets of the Scarlet and Violet era, as it featured cards depicting Pokemon and their respective Trainers.

A few days before the release of Destined Rivals, people are already on the lookout for this SIR version of Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex, a frameable masterpiece showing the Genetic Pokemon in a badass pose with Giovanni.

7. BWR Zekrom ex (Black Bolt)

Zekrom Ex From Black Bolt Set

As the only cards that bear the BWR rarity, it’s no surprise that this Zekrom ex will make the list. Just a single glance will make you understand why it’s highly sought after by many collectors nowadays.

With a monochromatic card design, BWR Zekrom ex perfectly captured the color theme of the Legendary Unova Pokemon from Generation 5.

6. BWR Victini (Black Bolt)

Victini From Black Bolt Set

With it being another BWR card, this Mythical Pokemon representing victory also takes a spot in our list of the most expensive cards from the Scarlet and Violet era.

What makes this card so rare is that, apart from its rarity, it’s also the only card that’s present in both the Black Bolt and White Flare sets, which, in turn, are the only Pokemon TCG dual sets printed in English.

5. BWR Reshiram ex (White Flare)

Reshiram Ex From White Flare Set

Fluctuations in their market prices made BWR Reshiram ex a bit more expensive than BWR Zekrom ex. There have been cases before where Zekrom ex took the lead, but apparently, Reshiram gets the upper hand this time.

With this BWR Reshiram ex card, we can see how it contrasts with the BWR Zekrom ex. Despite its somewhat hard-to-read text, it’s still a worthy find for anyone collecting cards from this set.

4. Promo Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat (Scarlet and Violet Promos)

Pikachu With Grey Felt Hat From Scarlet &Amp; Violet Promos Set

Anyone who opens Scarlet and Violet Promo packs knows that this card is the one to pull.

Inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s self-portrait, artist Naoyo Kimura created this Pikachu wearing a Grey Felt Hat—a piece that’s sure to make every art aficionado pause and reflect on its meaning, just like how people stare at museum paintings.

3. BWR Victini (White Flare)

Victini From White Flare, One Of The Most Expensive Cards From The Scarlet And Violet Era

You’re probably wondering how come BWR Victini in White Flare is much more expensive than its counterpart in Black Bolt. While they are basically the same Pokemon card, they’re technically different in terms of their card numbers (Black Bolt’s Victini is #171, while White Flare’s Victini is #172).

So far, apart from the fact that movements in the card market prices are the sole culprit, we can only speculate about the actual reasons why this BWR Victini is pricier than the other. Some say it’s because of pull rates, while some argue the availability of White Flare products in certain regions.

2. SIR Mew ex (Paldean Fates)

Mew Ex From Paldean Fates Set

It’s hard to imagine a Paldean Fates card won’t make this list, as the set is basically all about Shiny Pokemon. But thankfully, this SIR Mew ex didn’t disappoint in terms of value, and it is still getting higher up to this day.

Just look at that sleeping Shiny Mew with some cute Pokemon in the background. Pulling a card with that artwork will definitely make you spend some bucks and have them graded immediately.

1. SIR Umbreon ex (Prismatic Evolutions)

Umbreon Ex From Prismatic Evolutions Set

And now, in terms of ranking all the wallet-burning chase cards in the Scarlet and Violet era, nothing beats the hype of SIR Umbreon ex from Prismatic Evolutions. This card alone spawned hundreds or even thousands of scalpers around the world, which resulted in the scarcity of Prismatic Evolutions products.

Currently priced at over a thousand dollars, anyone who pulls this card either got incredibly lucky or spent a significant portion of their savings opening packs, since the odds of pulling it are only around 0.05%.

Final Thoughts

It’s not even close. SIR Umbreon ex still takes the throne for being the most expensive card from the Scarlet and Violet era. And who knows? Give it a few more years, especially when you can barely see Prismatic Evolutions packs in shops, and it might even rival those Base Set Charizard cards.

Right now, many of these cards are only owned by the most passionate and rich collectors, although you can still see them mainly in trading card conventions, all graded and with price tags on them.
