During the closing segment of the 2025 Pokemon World Championships, the CEO of Nintendo, Tsunekazu Ishihara, announced that another batch of Mega Evolution cards is about to hit the market, bearing the set name Phantasmal Flames.

We are indeed entering a new era of Pokemon TCG, as the Scarlet & Violet series recently concluded with the Black Bolt and White Flare sets.

The new meta after the World Championships will soon be filled with lots of powerful Mega Evolution cards, and it seems like the Mega Evolution sets will just keep on coming until the release of the long-awaited Generation 10 of the Pokemon video games.

If you’re interested in seeing some of the coolest Mega cards from the upcoming Mega Evolution Base Set, we made a previous post about it.

But for this post, we’ll zoom in a bit closer to the next big hit in Pokemon TCG, the Phantasmal Flames set.

More about Pokemon TCG:

Phantasmal Flames Release Date, Featured Cards, and Other Details

Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames is scheduled for release on November 14, just about two months from the time of writing. Prereleases are set to begin as early as November 1.

As for the set’s theme, Mega Charizard X will become its focal point, making this set an eye candy for many Charizard fans.

If this set has low pull rates for its SIRs, there’s a good chance that it might emulate the Prismatic Evolution craze, where prices for specific products soared higher than usual, attracting hordes of pesky scalpers.

Apart from Mega Charizard X, some of the Pokemon that might join the roster of Phantasmal Flames are new printings of Mega Lucario and Mega Gardevoir, as well as Mega Gengar, Mega Lopunny, and Mega Heracross.

As usual, these Pokemon will have their usual Pokemon ex cards with some powerful moves and extremely high HPs.

When it comes to the artwork, the Special Illustration Rares (SIRs) for Mega Charizard X, Gardevoir, and Lucario feature bold Japanese lettering across the card, a stylish callback to the original Mega Evolution cards from the X and Y era.

For Mega Charizard X, the text translates to “Inferno X,” while Mega Lucario’s reads “Mega Brave,” and Mega Gardevoir reads “Mega Symphonia.”

Note: It’s still unclear if the Mega Gardevoir ex and Mega Lucario ex cards revealed by Ishihara will be included in Phantasmal Flames. The Japanese text on these cards suggests they may actually belong to two separate Japanese sets.

Another thing that’s worth mentioning is that since Phantasmal Flames’ release date will come weeks after the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, we might also get some cards depicting the newly revealed Mega Evolution forms, such as Mega Dragonite.

Don’t count too much on this possibility yet, but we can safely assume that if new critters like Mega Victreebel won’t be in Phantasmal Flames, they will surely become a part of the succeeding sets for the Mega Evolution era.

All Mega Evolution cards for Phantasmal Flames that we’ve seen so far are labeled with “I,” making them legal for all tournaments, unless big changes happen for the next Pokemon TCG rotation.

Final Thoughts

We all know what usually happens when The Pokemon Company releases a new Charizard-themed set. Since this Pokemon holds one of the biggest fanbases in the community, it’s no surprise if SIR Mega Charizard X takes the top spot of the most valuable chase cards in Phantasmal Flames.

But before we feast our eyes on Phantasmal Flames, we’ll first test the waters of how these Mega Evolution cards will perform in games with the release of the Base Set on September 26.

We hope this article helped you decide whether you should spend some of your bucks on Phantasmal Flames products. If you want to learn everything about Pokemon TCG, keep following PokeCardHQ for more updates, guides, and even decklists.
