The Scarlet and Violet era in Pokemon TCG ended up with, ironically, a twin set that doesn’t feature any Gen 9 Pokemon.
Instead, the card game gave us some nostalgia once more by releasing Black Bolt and White Flare, which depict the Unovan legendaries, Zekrom and Reshiram.
Since it’s rare for the English Pokemon TCG to offer two sets at a time, we use this opportunity to post two separate chase card lists for the Gen 5-themed set.

10. Zoroark (Illustration Rare)
A Pokemon known for tricking its opponents, Zoroark is a master of illusions in the lore and is arguably one of the best Dark-type Pokemon ever designed in Gen 5.
Despite not being an SIR, this Zoroark card manages to outprice most of the Illustration Rares in the set, and it’s even pricier than the SIR Bouffalant ex. All hail the dark side!
9. Oshawott (Illustration Rare)
As Gen 5’s trusty Water-type starter, Oshawott must never be underestimated. Apart from its eventual evolution to a sword-wielding otter, this Pokemon is already capable of slashing its foes by using the shell on its chest.
Thankfully, Oshawott looks docile most of the time, as depicted by this Illustration Rare card, which is the most expensive Unova starter card in both the Black Bolt and White Flare sets.
8. Samurott (Illustration Rare)
In time, Oshawott will outgrow its weaponized shell and become a Samurott, an otter Pokemon that will waste no time in cutting its opponents in half with its pair of seamitars.
If you’re chasing Illustration Rares in White Flare, Samurott is your top pick in terms of value. Every other card on this list jumps straight into Special Illustration Rare territory.
7. Jellicent ex (Secret Illustration Rare)
Jellicent is known for having a rare type combination. Being a Water/Ghost type, fishermen are trying their best to avoid this Pokemon at sea, since Jellicent can drag them underwater and steal their lives.
Apart from having an equally creepy Pokedex entry like Drifloon, Jellicent ex has a cool-looking Secret Illustration Rare artwork featuring a male and female Jellicent.
6. Keldeo ex (Secret Illustration Rare)
After gaining the knowledge to fight, thanks to the Swords of Justice, Keldeo travels around oceans and seas to hone its skills. Keldeo’s true potential is only revealed once it reaches its Resolute form.
Keldeo’s Secret Illustration Rare in White Flare might not feature its Resolute Form, but the stunning artwork more than makes up for it. The background colors blend seamlessly with Keldeo’s own palette, creating a picture-perfect match.
5. Hilda (Secret Illustration Rare)
While Black Bolt only has N’s Plan for a Secret Illustration Rare Supporter, White Flare offers two Supporters of the same rarity: Hilda and Harlequin.
Apparently, Hilda has been stealing the spotlight lately, with her SIR card comfortably ranking as the fifth most expensive in White Flare right now. For those unfamiliar, Hilda is the default name of the playable female protagonist in Pokemon Black and White.
4. Hydreigon ex (Secret Illustration Rare)
The Dark/Dragon-type Hydreigon is a Gen 5 pseudo-legendary that can score lots of KOs as a Special Sweeper in the video games. According to its Pokedex entries, it’s a dangerous and aggressive Pokemon that responds to any sudden movements in its surroundings by attacking.
As expected, the new Pokemon ex card featuring Hydreigon ex is just as deadly in the lore, with its Greedy Eater ability that allows you to get an extra Prize card every time Hydreigon ex defeats an Active Basic Pokemon. It also has dope artwork, making it a must-pull for all avid collectors of the White Flare set.
3. Reshiram ex (Secret Illustration Rare)
Claiming the third spot is White Flare’s cover star, Reshiram. As Zekrom’s counterpart, this Legendary can engulf the world in flames with the massive heat energy generated by its tail.
This Secret Illustration Rare Reshiram ex might not shake up the current meta, lacking any standout moves or abilities. Even so, it’s notoriously hard to pull, and its striking white-and-orange artwork helps justify its price tag.
2. Reshiram ex (Black White Rare)
Many collectors nowadays are eyeing any Black White Rare card that they can get their hands on, and this Reshiram ex is no exception.
There’s no doubt this is a dream card, especially since the Pokemon TCG has never released a monochromatic design before. If you’re lucky enough to pull this card, put it inside a sleeve right away, as it’s easy to see the imperfections in a white card.
1. Victini (Black White Rare)
BWR Victini remains the #1 chase card in both Black Bolt and White Flare. Known as the embodiment of victory, Victini is said in the Pokemon world to bring undefeated luck to its Trainer.
If you manage to pull one, consider it your personal lucky charm. Or, if you’re keen on selling it, you just got yourself a card that’s worth half a grand. Maybe even more if its market demand continues to skyrocket.
Conclusion
White Flare is a set for those looking for lots of full-art cards featuring non-Legendary Pokemon. But if you’re a Legendary enthusiast, we suggest that you buy Black Bolt packs instead.
Regardless of the pack you have, the best chase card will always be Victini or any Black White Rare. However, don’t stress yourself out in case you can’t get any of them, as these sets are filled with cool-looking Gen 5 Pokemon that are always fun to collect.
