Pokemon TCG Ascended Heroes

The Ascended Heroes set is finally here, and let’s take a look at the most expensive chase cards that people are trying to get right now!

For the first special expansion of Pokemon TCG’s Mega Evolution era, Ascended Heroes will be forever remembered as the set that introduced a variety of new Mega forms of Pokemon introduced in Pokemon Legends ZA.

This special expansion also added a new type of card rarity in the franchise called Mega Attack Rare. A Mega Attack Rare card is easy to identify thanks to its colorful full-art illustration and prominent Japanese text, which translates to the featured Pokemon’s signature attack.

The Ascended Heroes set is currently out in the market as of writing, and prices are already on top of the charts if we rank all the cards that are getting most of the attention at the moment.

Whether you’re planning to pick up Ascended Heroes products or have already visited your local shop, be sure to grab sleeves and toploaders, as you might end up pulling one of the following cards.

10. Mega Diancie ex (282 Special Illustration Rare)

Mega Diancie Ex (282 Special Illustration Rare)

Although Mega Diancie existed well before Legends ZA, Pokemon TCG never truly gave it the attention it deserved until now, with this Special Illustration Rare showcasing the Jewel Pokemon radiating confident and elegant pink energy.

According to its Pokedex entry, Diancie was once a Carbink and, after experiencing a strange mutation, became the Mythical Jewel Pokemon that many people love today.

9. Mega Feraligatr ex (274 Special Illustration Rare)

When the Pokemon community first caught a glimpse of Mega Feraligatr, comments were generally mixed, with some even taking an utter dislike to the Mega form of the fan-favorite Water-type from Generation 2.

However, people eventually got used to Mega Feraligatr’s appearance, and now, its first Special Illustration copy costs more than $200. Quite ironic, eh?

8. Lillie’s Clefairy ex (280 Special Illustration Rare)

Lillie’s Clefairy Ex (280 Special Illustration Rare)

This Clefairy likely would not have made the list if not for one key detail. It isn’t just any Clefairy; it’s the one owned by Lillie!

And if you’ve been collecting Pokemon cards for a while, you already know how much collectors love Lillie cards, as seen in the Mega Evolution Base Set, where Lillie’s Determination commands one of the highest prices.

7. Pikachu (277 Special Illustration Rare)

Pikachu (277 Special Illustration Rare)

Rarer prints of Pikachu cards tend to be expensive, considering the fact that it’s one of the most popular Pokemon of all time. Ash’s trusted partner returns in Pokemon TCG with this ultra-cute SIR card depicting a Pikachu in its Stellar form.

This Pikachu is just a different copy of the ones in Surging Sparks, but its colorful and chibi-style illustration makes it a deserving chase card for the Ascended Heroes set.

6. Team Rocket’s Mewtwo (281 Special Illustration Rare)

Team Rocket’s Mewtwo (281 Special Illustration Rare)

Trainer-owned Pokemon are back in Ascended Heroes, and with this set we also have another card that became the main attraction from the previous ones, just like this SIR Team Rocket’s Mewtwo, who made the list as the most expensive card in the Destined Rivals set.

Its illustration may not be as flashy as its Destined Rivals counterpart, and Giovanni looks a bit awkward from that angle, but the card has still been skyrocketing in price lately, likely due to its strength in the current meta.

5. Mega Dragonite ex (290 Special Illustration Rare)

Mega Dragonite Ex (290 Special Illustration Rare)

As the face of Ascended Heroes, Mega Dragonite ex makes its Pokemon TCG debut across four different rarities. All of them command strong prices, but the second most expensive is the Special Illustration Rare, which features artwork showcasing every Pokemon in Dratini’s evolution line.

Like Mega Feraligatr, Mega Dragonite has drawn mixed reactions from fans, but one thing is clear. This Mega form is here to stay, and as one of the first Mega Evolutions introduced in Legends ZA, it could receive even more card versions in the future.

4. Pikachu (276 Special Illustration Rare)

Pikachu (276 Special Illustration Rare)

It’s quite rare to have two Special Illustration Rare copies of the same Pokemon in a set, but here we are. If the chibi Stellar Pikachu isn’t your thing, you might go for this basic Pikachu ex, whose illustration reminds me of the three-star Pikachu ex in Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Genetic Apex set.

This card doesn’t have any ability or a flashy move, so the fact that it’s a cute Pikachu card is probably the main reason why people are willing to pay almost half a grand just to add it to their collection.

3. Mega Dragonite ex (295 Mega Hyper Rare)

Mega Dragonite Ex (295 Mega Hyper Rare)

Mega Hyper Rare cards are quite hard to obtain nowadays, leading to many people putting a hefty price tag on cards like this Mega Dragonite ex.

Gold Pokemon cards are highly sought after by collectors, especially those building extensive Hyper Rare collections, making a gold card featuring Mega Dragonite a major pull for anyone lucky enough to find one in a booster pack.

2. Mega Charizard Y ex (294 Mega Hyper Rare)

Mega Charizard Y Ex (294 Mega Hyper Rare)

Should we explain it more? Of course, any rare Charizard card will always stand near or at the top of any chase card list just because, well, it’s a Charizard, and we all know it rivals the likes of Pikachu and Eevee in terms of the largest fan bases.

While the Phantasmal Flames set introduced fresh new versions of Mega Charizard X, Ascended Heroes shifted the spotlight to Mega Charizard Y. Collectors who own the Mega Hyper Rare Charizard X can place it alongside the Mega Charizard Y card to see how the two designs complement each other.

1. Mega Gengar ex (284 Special Illustration Rare)

Mega Gengar Ex (284 Special Illustration Rare)

The most valuable chase card in the Ascended Heroes set is the Special Illustration Rare copy of Mega Gengar ex. This Mega Pokemon first appeared in the Phantasmal Flames set, and its SIR version quickly became a market standout due to its limited supply.

Although it isn’t a Mega Attack Rare card, its vibrant color palette gives it a similar feel, and the combination of hues in the illustration looks especially striking when put inside a PSA slab.

Final Thoughts

SIR Mega Gengar ex, together with the Mega Hyper Rare copies of Mega Charizard Y ex and Mega Dragonite ex, ended up taking the top spots in the costliest and most collector-worthy cards of the Ascended Heroes set.

Ascended Heroes is also filled with other valuable cards that didn’t make this list, such as the Trainer-owned cards. If you can’t find some Destined Rivals products at your local stores, perhaps you might go for this set instead.

Mega Attack Rare cards are also quite expensive, ranging around $100. If you’re lucky enough to pull one, make sure that you take care of it as well.
